Project evaluation: Drink Label

For this project I was asked to make a drinks Logo and label for from the drink categories; Milk/Milkshake,Smoothies,Juice,Coffee or wine, so I chose Milkshake, which I was also told to do in the project brief, therefore my outcome was a milkshake logo and label, which was then also put on a bottle.

To create my Logo I first began by drawing out a few ideas, when I had decided on a final logo I then went on to scanning it onto photoshop where I cleaned it up and started experimenting with colours and textures e.g. scanning tissue paper, To help me create the logo I did research on other milkshake logos to find out the types of things included in their logos and the types of fonts used for different target audience, I also did market research with my target audience to find out which logo was best for that audience, instead of just using my personal opinion, I made sure I met my deadline by keeping on-top with my work and not falling behind.

The part of the process I liked the most was when I began to experiment with different textures such as the tissue paper to create an ice looking effect, which I then scanned into photoshop and tried different colour variations to see which was best suited to the logo itself, The thing that makes my outcome a success was that it came out more or less how I expected it, I also produced it before the deadline date and I met the brief as I made a logo and label along with the information on the label, which was then stuck on a bottle and photographed.

One thing that didn't go well is that when I printed the label the colours were not as bright as they appeared on the computer, therefore I did not like the colours much, if I had more time I would make changes to the colours I used and try more variations of the logo, I completed all the work as I had a completed final outcome on the deadline.

During this project I learnt how to experiment with different materials to create different textures and also how dramatically you can change them on photoshop just by using and experimenting with simple effects, Personally I think I improved on my photoshop skills because I now know how to use more of the tools than I did before this project due to using photoshop for a majority of the time to do experimentation with the different effects, through my research I learnt how different fonts, colours and imagery can be used to target an audience.

Drink logo analysis 1

This Logo Is for the drink 'Shmoo', The logo is the word shmoo in white with a outline of yellow and black, then there is a pink splash behind the word to imply its a milkshake, I think this logo is aimed at a younger audience as it has an innocent look to it due to the rounded letters, and the outlines make the logo look bubbly and friendly.

The main colours used are White and pink which are the colours many people would associate with milk or milkshake, the pink especially makes it more obvious that the logo is for a milkshake, as if you look on other milkshake logo's there is also a lot of pink, therefore people most associate pink colours with milkshake.

The use of bubbly/rounded letters for the logo tries to give the image that the drink is a young or fresh drink, and also gives us some ideas on how it may taste, e.g. the letters are bold therefore the flavour could be very bold.

Personally I think the logo was successful because if I was to see this drink in a shop I would most likely buy it due to the bright colours used in the logo as it makes it stand out from the rest, it might influence my own logo design as I may consider how different fonts and colours take an affect on who would buy the product.

oscar wilson Analysis

Homework
Research the work of Oscar Wilson to gain an understanding of his process, influences and context. You will present an in-depth analysis on your blog in written form supported by relevant imagery. Use the analysis framework sheet below to help you.

Meaning

The Calligram is made to advertise london, and tell people all the things you would see or go around london, therefore the bus is made out of popular places around london.

Aesthetics

To make this Calligram Oscar Wilson would have drawn the image first and made sure all the words fitted and then scanned the image into illustrator where he would have edited any small mistakes and then coloured the image, He made some of the letters different shades of red to create the shapes of the bus, like the bends on the bus or where it goes in.

Context

This Calligram was made By oscar wilson who specialises in image creation Handcrafted Typography (Calligrams) , The piece was made as an advertising poster to advertise London to tourist, I choose to analyse this piece of work because I want to use a similar theme in my calligram whereby the words that make the object are associated with that object.

Personal response

I chose to look at this work because Im going to do a similar themed Calligram where the words that make the object are associated with the object, also because I liked the work as I like he Oscar Wilson has made a London bus out of words to do with London.

Hand made vs Digital typography

Matt W.Moore/ Hennie Haworth

Aesthetics

Matt's typography is digital which also allows him to work on a larger scale and uses bold blocks of colour also, a lot of geometrical shapes so the work looks structured and well thought out, whereas with Hennie's work it is hand drawn allowing her to add a more personal touch to the work as each letter would not come out perfect, but she also uses bold colours and big fonts making the work seem more appealing and interesting to look at

Context

Matt  was Born in 1980 in portland and  used to do graffiti, which may have inspired the style of his work now, and also his work has a modern and futuristic look to his work as it is digital, he has worked for large companies such as coco-cola and nike, whereas Hennie has done work for smaller companies such as the the guardian and waitrose which may represent both the of the scales of their work, Hennie studied illustration in brighton which i think also had some input to her work as the typography is hand drawn and its very playful and there are also images within the text.

Meaning

Matt has worked for much larger companies than Hennie Haworth, I think this represent his work as it is usually big and bold therefore bigger companies would use his work as its more noticable, With Hennie haworths work I think the handrawn aspect of the work adds a personal touch to the work and also the font for each name on the work represents the personality of the people.

Personal response

Matt's work seems to be futurist and could also been seen as musculine because the word is also bold and uses geometric shapees, its also very colourful and vibrant, Also Hennie's work is Bold and interesting because of the colours used, its also very personal work because its handrawn, and also has a feminine touch to it because its drawn delicately.

Rob Ryan analysis

Context
Rob Ryan is a Paper cutter artist who is mainly known for his extremely detailed paper cut outs.

Aesthetics

Rob ryans work is handmade which gives the work a more personal touch because you cannot get every detail perfect or the same and also the hand made aspect of it makes me appriciate the work more as it has extremely small details which would have been dellicately cut out, also the work is well structured so that all the little pieces connect to each other to create a strong structure so it doesn't fall apart, i also like that in each piece only one plain and bold colour is used, which makes it simple yet effective and lets us concentrate on the detail rather than the colours

Meanings

Rob's work is very detailed but has a simple touch to it as well, also most of his work relates in some way to themes of love and relationships so i think his work is like a metaphor for love where it can require a lot of hard work and detail but in the end can look like something simple until you take a deeper look into it,

Personal response

I like the way the work is very detailed and delicate and I like what is writing in the images as it usually tells a little story or has a quote.
